Those Rotten Americans.
13th-Dec-2007 07:00 am
Al Gore continues to lead the parade of those who know better than Americans what America ought to do, especially if he can get those who don't have, but want, power over what Americans do on his side.

Think I'm exaggerating? Check it out.

The basic point is always the same: those on the hard Left hate America, no matter where they are in the world.

It's not so much that they hate America, as they hate what America is: Independent, strong, free.

They want us to become Europe, you see. They'd like nothing better than us to turn into a second France.

Why should we imitate countries much younger than we are? The experience with constitutional systems is on our side (as I recall, France's current republic was from the Sinatra era, and I think Sinatra did a better job of it).

Oh, we shouldn't.

I'm just saying, the Lefties think that they're doing good. They're not *consciously* monsters. Just effectively.

Is this like Orwell calling the British peace activists "objectively pro-fascist"?

There have been some interesting comments on that statement, and I'm inclined more to view it as something that gets thrown in when you are face to face with the person you are describing, but which, otherwise, is merely the luxury of insisting that history divides where you want it to, for everybody.

I would deny, for example, that because I don't take a gun out and monitor the alleyways in my neighborhood, and, in fact, would oppose anyone but a policeman doing so, that I am "objectively pro-mugger".

He says this:

The late Michael Kelly was the worst, adding to the mix the own absurd insinuation that the Taliban might someday conquer the US:

This is a clear example of status- rather than reality-based thinking. The reason why Islamic fundamentalists are unlikely to conquer the US is because the US is unfriendly to their ideas and prepared to back this unfriendliness up with force.

If we went sufficiently pacifist, of course the Islamists might someday conquer the US. Our present status as dominant world superpower does not guarantee that we will remain strong forever.

And if you doubt me, ask the Eastern Roman Imperial government if they are still successfully holding back the Muslim invaders. You may have some difficulty finding their embassy, of course ...

What? I thought you didn't like lefties. Why are you then defending them from my criticism? Aren't you the one who said that they hate america?

I personally wouldn't be opposed to neighborhood watches doing the same. Of course, I am of the opinion that if we're going to emulate any European country, it should be Switzerland. (in terms of how armed the populace is and how militarized, anyway)

Sorry for the sharp tone. I'm just starting to be convinced that we might be dealing with people who don't want to deal with reality, and I can't blame people whose brain is tricking them. I'm still thinking about this, so the conversation isn't over, and any contribution you'd care to make would be welcome.

Switzerland is a good model for an armed populace, though there have been arguments the other way. I just have a problem with the self-selection process of current volunteer nightwatches: sometimes those who are turned down by police departments still want that power.
