This article caught my attention, recommendedthe Affable Stranger. It's on a subject I'm fairly ignorant of (meaning I'm liable to repeat thoughtlessly the things I've heard, rather than having definite ideas) -- the subject of how many people were executed in the "witch trials". The parenthetical is the point, here: I'd heard the number first cited, and had repeated it once to a friend, and I'm about to write him a note saying I was wrong. Not that I'm alone in error: Wikipedia reports a number of 200,000 from an academic source, which, while considerably less, is probably still four times to high at best.

Try not to repeat my mistakes.....
