I accept that I will once again get advice that Republicans need to support gay marriage, and abortion. But that is what Democrats are for, and I decline to compete in that area.

The question is always, What holds my allegiance? Am I committed to a set of principles, or to winning? The advice you mention comes from what I call "GOP fanboys" bent on winning, or Democrat Iagos (also bent on winning).

Principles -- the right ones -- last. So we stick to them, put them into practice when possible, and seek new ways to communicate them. If people won't have it, tant pis pour eux. Just because they're dragging America off course, I don't have to stop being American.

I've been reading Jeremiah the prophet, specifically chapters 40-45 this week. He was in a similar situation.

Thanks. A little tired for good HTML. Or thinking through.

Thanks for the Jeremiah reference. It's good. As pointed out, traditions can pull us off course from the principles.

Now, let's see if I can pass through my latest (ridiculously long) find, from election night's feed from Bill Whittle: here. Sit down when you have a lot of time. Kind of reminds me of discussions my Dad used to have with his friends, when the rule was you could speak as long as you were holding your drink in your hand and ended with a toast.
